Workers' Compensation

What is workers’ compensation?

If you sustain a job injury or a work-related illness, the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act provides payment for your medical expenses and, in the event you are unable to work, wage-loss compensation benefits until you’re able to go back to work. Additionally, death benefits for work-related deaths are paid to the dependent survivors.

Who is covered?

Nearly every Pennsylvania worker is covered by the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act. Employers must provide workers’ compensation coverage for all of their employees, including seasonal and part-time workers. Nonprofit corporations, unincorporated businesses and even employers with only one employee must comply with the Act’s requirements.

In Pennsylvania you are eligible for workers’ compensation if:

  • You were hurt at work
  • Your employment aggravated a pre-existing injury
  • You developed an occupational illness

What should you do if you were injured on the job?

If you were injured in your workplace, it is important to seek medical help. It is also important to tell your employer about the accident as soon as possible. Inform your employer of the date and place of injury. Even if you think that the injury is small, your employer should be made aware it occurred. In Pennsylvania, you have 120 days to let your employer know that you suffered a work injury. Seeking medical help and letting your employer know about your injury are both important steps to take to protect your rights under the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act.
